How to Know if Your Garage Door is Insulated

An insulated garage door is beneficial to your garage for many reasons. The team here at 1st Rate Garage Doors can install a new door that has a higher R-value so that you get the insulation you need. If you’re not sure if your current model is insulated, here’s a quick test you can try.
1. Do The Test in The Morning
For the best accuracy, you’ll want to conduct the test first thing in the morning. Also, you will need to park your car in the garage for this test. If you aren’t able to park your car in the garage, then you will need to place a thermometer in the room overnight.
2. Turn on the Car
Let your car run long enough for it to display the temperature inside of the garage. If you do not have a car, you’ll need to make a note of the temperature that’s displayed on the thermometer. Once you get a read on the inside temps, open the garage and go outside.
3. Let the Thermometer Read the Outside Temps
After you get your car or thermometer outside, you’ll need to let it adjust to the temperatures outside. If it is cold outside, it should register colder than it did in the garage. If it is warmer, it should display a temperature that’s higher than what it was in your garage.

Of course, this is a basic test and won’t tell you how insulated your door is, but it does give you an idea of whether or not it is providing any insulation at all.
Insulate Your Door
There are a few quick fixes you can make to increase the insulation of your door. You should consider these ideas to reduce moisture in your garage and regulate the temperatures.
Install or Replace Weather Stripping
If you don’t have weatherstripping at all, then you need to add it on the top and bottom of your garage. If you already have weather stripping, you should check the condition of it to determine if it needs to be replaced.
Add Insulation To Your Current Door
You can purchase insulation kits for garage doors and beef up the insulation that way. It will reinforce your panels and provide the additional protection you want for your home. However, if your door isn’t in good shape, you should consider getting something new.
Upgrade Your Door
The best option for you could be to install a newer door that is insulated. Make sure that you choose a door with an R-value of 18 or more. Our technicians can point you toward the door that will work best for your house.
